Camp Cornie

Road D3700 along the Kunene River 30Km upstream from Epupa and 62km downstream from Swartbooisdrif

Under a giant wild fig tree with emerald green water meandering past a piece of paradise has been claimed and called Camp Cornie. This rustic camp on the banks of the Kunene river offers the coldest beer in this remote region. Camp Cornie is equipped to make your experience most enjoyable and comfortable, with solar electricity and outlets at each campsite for your comfort. We also offer tented accommodation with an en-suite bathroom. A perfect variety to choose from that will provide you with a memorable and comfortable camping experience. A visit to Camp Cornie will definitely be a highlight for your camping adventure. While enjoying your visit at Camp Cornie you can search for giant crocodiles on the rivers white sand banks, throw in a line and see how many of the 46 different species of fish you can catch or search for the rare Cinderella Waxbill to be found only in this area or the other beautiful and abundant bird life, as well as a tour to the local Himba village. All this while you sip a cold beer at the swimming pool or bar with access to WIFI.

Spacious and clean right on the river bank. Each camp site has it’s own private shower and toilet.

Sufficient Solar electricity is available at each site for your camp fridge and lighting needs throughout the night.

(No appliances with a heating element like: kettles, hair dryers, air conditioners or geysers can be accommodated during night time hours).

Rates: N$300 per person, per night.

Self catering with fire place, gas stove and basin. Utensils and crockery are provided on request.

Fishing

The Kunene River (Cunene in Angola) has a diverse freshwater fish fauna. Surveys have recorded about 46 freshwater species in the Namibian section, with several species endemic to the Kunene system.
African Pike — Known for being large and aggressive sport fish.
Bream — A popular target for freshwater anglers.
Catfish — Found in deep pools and quiet sections of the river.
Kunene Labeo — Native carp species specific to this region.
Papermouth & Western Bottlenose — Frequently caught by anglers in the middle and upper river spots.

Birding

The Kunene River is one of Namibia’s best places for localized “specials” because the permanent river, palms, springs, rocky escarpment and dry woodland create habitats that are otherwise scarce in north-western Namibia. Around Epupa alone, roughly 240 species have been recorded.

Rufous-tailed Palm-Thrush — beautiful and strongly associated with the palms
Monteiro’s Hornbill — spectacular subject and very “Kaokoveld”.
Rüppell’s Parrot — gorgeous colours and distinctive.
Hartlaub’s Spurfowl — excellent rocky-mountain specialty.

Village tour — Highly recommended, this tour is at an authentic local village and local school where you will experience the local HIMBA culture and their day to day living environment.
Hiking — Various hiking routes can be explored based on fitness and expertise.
Cycling — For those with their own equipment numerous routes varying from gravel road, jeep track , single track and cross country for the more adventurous and experience riders.
Canoeing — Canoes are available for hire in the camp. Please remember that there are big crocodiles in the area. This activity is dangerous and performed at your own risk.
Sunset tours — Nothing beats an African sunset. Join us for sundowners and beautiful views.
Crocodile searching — Go on a guided tour in search of the gaint crocodiles found in the area.
